A homeowner in Vaughan, Ontario was handed a fine of $880 after hosting a birthday party that was linked to 11 cases of coronavirus, CP24 reports.

The Provincial Offences Notice ticket consists of a $750 fine for breaking the lockdown rules and a $130 surcharge.

The party, which was hosted on Dec. 6, was attended by 22 people. The ages of attendees ranged between three and 54. No children reportedly came down with the virus, however.

York Region was in the red zone of Ontario's coronavirus reopening plan at the time, meaning more than five people were prohibited from gathering indoors.

"Of the 22 attendees, seven were identified as high-risk contacts and four are considered low-risk contacts with the remaining 11 attendees confirmed cases," York Region Public Health wrote in a statement. "Low-risk contacts" consists of people who stayed outside, socially distanced, and dropped presents at the door. "High-risk contacts," those who went inside, are advised to self-isolate for two weeks.

"This serves as a reminder how social gatherings, including birthday parties and holiday celebrations, may seem harmless but they have the potential to spread COVID-19 to children and vulnerable adults," York Region Public Health's statement continued.
