An Orangeville, Ontario hospital director has retired from her position as staff director after she used her position of authority to have her family jump vaccination queues and receive the vaccine early.

Headwaters Health Care Centre CEO Kim Delahunt confirmed to CTV News that the staff director "had an elderly family member vaccinated during a break in scheduled appointments at the vaccination clinic."

"As health-care professionals, we have an obligation to make appropriate decisions and as leaders must accept that we will be held to a higher standard. However, as humans, we are also influenced by our innate sense of duty and care for our families," Delahunt added.

"This was a failure in sound decision making by one individual, for which they and the hospital are deeply sorry."

The name of the director has not been made public, and she has since retired.

Thus far, just 1.7 percent of Ontarians have been vaccinated, below the national average of 1.87 percent. Canada as a whole has administered over 650,000 first doses of the vaccine.
