In Ontario, hydro rates are being slashed for families, small businesses and farmers during the coronavirus crisis.

On Tuesday, Premier Doug Ford will annouce lower rates for the province with Energy Minister Greg Rickford. The lower hydro rates will continue for 45 days to soften the blow for those who are working from home, self-isolating or no longer have a job.

A government source has estimated the cost at $162 million, according to The Globe and Mail. The current ban on disconnecting electricity for small businesses or households will also be extended by The Ontario Energy Board until July 31.

The source noted that lowering rates was a necessary move as families and businesses endure the effects of the ongoing pandemic.

The rates will drop on Tuesday to $0.101 cents per kilowatt hour—the same as weekend and off-peak overnight charges. At the moment, mid-peak rates stand at $0.144 while on-peak rates are $0.208.

The government has estimated that families will save over $20 per month, small businesses will save about $150 and farms will save over $300.

Doug Ford recently noted that his government wants to provide Ontario families with relief and flexibility through difficult times.
