Ten months after returning to Canada from Turkey, and after her husband was arrested for terrorism offences, a Markham based woman has been taken into custody by police for trying to join ISIS, Global reports.

The Public Prosecution Service of Canada confirms that Haleema Mustafa was taken into custody in Markham, Ontario on Wednesday and will appear in court Thursday.

“Haleema Mustafa has been arrested today and charged with the two following terrorism offences: leaving Canada to participate in the activities of a terrorist group pursuant to section 83.181 of the Criminal Code and participation in the activities of a terrorist group pursuant to section 83.18 of the Criminal Code,” spokesperson Sabrina Nemis of the Public Prosecution Service told reporters.

Haleema Mustafa’s husband, Ikar Mao, has been in custody under two counts of terrorism since last December. In June 2019, the couple was caught in a Turkish city not far from the Syrian border. The couple was detained about an hour away from the border and returned to Canada separately.
