Oregon Governor declares that federal agents are leaving Portland, gets quickly corrected by DHS and President Trump

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown announced that by Thursday, federal officers will be removed from Portland but President Trump and the DHS have said otherwise.

“After my discussions with VP Pence and others, the federal government has agreed to withdraw federal officers from Portland. They have acted as an occupying force & brought violence. Starting tomorrow, all Customs and Border Protection & ICE officers will leave downtown Portland,” tweeted Brown on Wednesday.

The news was contradicted by President Trump who said federal officers will not be leaving the city until it is secured.

"We’re hearing all sorts of reports about us leaving. We’re not leaving until they secure their city. We told the governor, we told the mayor: secure your city. If they don’t secure their city soon, we have no choice, we will have to go in there and clean it out," he said.

On Wednesday, Trump tweeted, "If the Federal Government and its brilliant Law Enforcement (Homeland) didn’t go into Portland one week ago, there would be no Portland -- It would be burned and beaten to the ground. If the Mayor and Governor..."

Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf posted a tweet that also contradicted Gov. Brown’s statement.

"As I told the Governor yesterday, federal law enforcement will remain in Portland until the violent activity toward our federal facilities ends. We are not removing any law enforcement while our facilities and law enforcement remain under attack," he said

The tweet was posted on Wednesday after Wolf released a statement concerning the situation.

"The Department will continue to maintain our current, augmented federal law enforcement personnel in Portland until we are assured that the Hatfield Federal Courthouse and other federal properties will no longer be attacked and that the seat of justice in Portland will remain secure.  This has been our mission and objective since the violent, criminal activity began," the statement reads

The news follows reports of Ted Wheeler discussing the removal of federal troops with the White House. It also comes after it was reported that more federal officers are being deployed to the city.

Anti-police protests and riots have now been going on in Portland for over 60 nights in a row.
