An Ottawa man who stabbed a mother and her two daughters on Monday night was charged just days ago with sexual assault against another woman and released from custody shortly thereafter.

Joshua Graves, 21, was shot and killed by officers on the scene after he allegedly refused to put his knife down.

Graves's death comes just three days after he appeared in court for sex crimes against another woman. He was arrested on Thursday and was released from custody on Friday, reports the CBC.

According to records, Graves was charged on June 24 with three counts of criminal harassment, assault, and sexual assault after he allegedly stalked a woman from his school this year.

Graves allegedly continually tried to kiss the woman. He was charged, and released that same day with consent of the Crown.

He was ordered to live with his mother, not at his father's where the tragedy took place days later.

The victims have been identified as 50-year-old Anne Marie Ready and her 15-year old daughter Jasmine Ready, who both succumbed to their injuries. Ready's 19-year-old daughter survived after being stabbed by Graves and accidentally shot by police.

According to relatives of Graves, he had previously shown a romantic interest in one of the daughters but was told to not be in contact with her.

Graves was pronounced dead at the scene after three officers opened gunfire on him following his refusal to drop his weapon. The bodies of the woman and sister were found nearby.

Greg Graves, father of Joshua, is asking for "peace and forgiveness."

"I believe I know the demons my son was grappling with that resulted in the terrible actions. It is a tragedy for all of us and one we will need to understand and reconcile in the days ahead," he said.
