House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has rarely been seen without a mask during this past pandemic year, seems unwilling to give them up just because the CDC has advised them to be unnecessary for unvaccinated people.
Pelosi said that she will still require members of congress to wear masks on the House floor, even though the CDC, and the president, both said that people who have been vaccinated don't have to wear them.
Pelosi told CNN, when asked, that the rule requiring masking will not change. The rule was put into place in July 2020, when Pelosi took issue with Republican lawmakers who didn't want to do so.
"No," Pelosi said, intimating that not all congresspersons are vaccinated when asking "Are they all vaccinated?" A spokesperson for the speaker said that Pelosi has no clarity on who in congress has been vaccinated and who has not been.
Pelosi did allow those who are speaking to remove their masks for the purpose of addressing the House chamber.
CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said that "If you are fully vaccinated, you can start doing the things that you had stopped doing because of the pandemic. We have all longed for this moment when we can get back to some sense of normalcy."
President Biden said on Thursday that vaccinated people don't need to wear a mask. But he also said "Y'know, some may say they just feel more comfortable continuing to wear a mask. They may feel that way. So if you're someone with a mask, you see them, please treat them with kindness and respect."
Dr. Anthony Fauci suggested that kids, who have not yet been approved for the vaccine will have to remain masked.
