On Thursday night, a Philadelphia pizza delivery driver thwarted a carjacking attempt by shooting the armed suspect multiple times.

Investigators say the 39-year-old delivery driver was dropping off food at around 7:30 pm on the 3300 block of H Street when he was approached by the armed suspect, according to Fox 29.

Police say the suspect allegedly pointed his gun at the delivery driver and demanded his vehicle. The driver then pulled his own weapon out and shot the suspect six times, according to ABC 6. Philadelphia Police Inspector DF Pace said that the suspect was able to return fire, but did not injure the driver.

The suspect was taken to Temple University Hospital by private vehicle and was placed in critical condition. According to Fox 29, police said he is being held as a prisoner. Authorities say two people who were with the suspect are being questioned at this time.

In recent weeks, police in the city have ramped up patrols in an attempt to tackle the growing carjacking crisis in the city.

So far this year, Philadelphia has seen more than 90 carjackings, according to ABC 6. Last year, there were more than 750 carjacking incidents total.
