The Conservatives have once again out-performed their political rivals in the fundraising department, bringing in over $8.3 million in donations in the first quarter of 2023.

During the first four months of the year, the Conservatives brought in more money than all other parties combined, beating out their nearest rivals, the Liberals, by nearly $5 million.

According to Elections Canada, the Conservative Party raised $8,345,791 from 45,659 individual contributors, recording an additional $144,925 in transfers from candidates, leadership contestants, and nomination contestants.

In contrast, the Liberal Party brought in $3,689,402 from 30,720 individual donors, and an additional $37,699 in transfers. While the Conservatives did not note any transfers from registered associations, the Liberals recorded a number of the, to the tune of $25,434.

While the Conservatives have historically been able to raise more money than the Liberals, a gap of nearly $5 million was unexpected. In a statement, the party said its ablity to raise funds "speaks to the growing movement of Canadians who are putting their hard-earned dollars behind a leader who is listening to them and speaking to their concerns."

Further down the list, the NDP managed to garner $1.3 million from 16,000 donors while the Greens, Bloc Quebecois, and People's Party pulled in $401,000, $322,000 and $296,000, respectively.

According to Léger, the Conservatives under the leadership of Pierre Poilievre are polling at 36 percent, 6 percent ahead of Prime Minister Trudeau's Liberals.

Since taking over as leader, Poilievre has gone on the offensive against his Liberal rival, a tactic that appears to have won the hearts of donors. As Global News reports, in first three quarters of 2022, the Conservatives out-performed the Liberals by at least $1 million, however when Poilievre was voted in to head the party, the gap widened to $4 million in the last quarter of the year.
