A delivery worker in Indianapolis was shot on Monday by a man who was allegedly angry about not receiving a stimulus check, according to Global News.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department released a statement noting that Angela Summers, a 45-year-old US Postal Service worker died as a result of gunshot wounds shortly after 4 p.m. on Monday.

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) said that Summers had previously communicated concerns about the residents at the house where the man was arrested.

Paul Toms, the president of Branch 39 of the NALC said that the union is under the impression that the person at the home was not getting a stimulus cheque in the deliveries made by Summers.

“The mail had been curtailed from what I was told very recently,” Toms said to the broadcast station. “On April 12 or 13, the curtailment of mail letter was sent to them.”

Summers also reportedly gave homeowners "dog letters" asking for dogs to be kept inside while she was making her deliveries.

“There was a history on this for quite a while, as I understand it. Dog letters had been sent. That’s a form to the patron when a dog is a nuisance or a danger or vicious,” Toms said when speaking with Fox 59.

“Three dog letters, one to warn them, a second one (as) a second warning, and then a curtailment of mail. That’s what they had proceeded to there.”

After Summers skipped the man’s home, an altercation began on the porch, according to an affidavit filed in court and sworn by another US postal worker.

The affidavit says that she proceeded to spray the man with mace after he approached her, then he pulled a gun from his waist and fired. The man later said that because he has asthma, the spray bothered him.

According to the affidavit, the man was trying to scare Summers and did not have the intention of killing her.

On Monday, 21-year-old Tony Cushingberry was arrested and charged with murder, discharging a firearm during the commission of an offence, and assault.

To help cover the funeral costs, a GoFundMe was set up for Summers’ family and has reached $17,500 after a goal of $16,500 was set.

The USPS offered up to $50,000 as a reward for information on the incident.
