The American Postal Workers Union has come out against vaccine mandates for its workers, as the Biden administration plans to announce mandatory vaccinations for federal employees.
In a statement, the union representing over 220,000 postal workers wrote, "Maintaining the health and safety of our members is of paramount importance."
"While the APWU leadership continues to encourage postal workers to voluntarily get vaccinated, it is not the role of the federal government to mandate vaccinations for the employees we represent."
"Issues related to vaccinations and testing for COVID-19 in the workplace must be negotiated with the APWU. At this time the APWU opposes the mandating of COVID-19 vaccinations in relation to U.S. postal workers."
The New York Times reported that Federal employees who do not wish to take the jab will be subject to harsh measures such as regular COVID-19 testing, social distancing, mask wearing, and travel restrictions.
Other workplaces, including Google's offices, will mandate the COVID-19 vaccine for their employees, as a push to ramp up the United States' lagging vaccination rates as cases of the Delta variant are on the rise.
