In a White House press conference on Friday, press secretary Jen Psaki was questioned on whether President Joe Biden's newly announced vaccine requirements for businesses were a way for the federal government to work out a vaccine requirement for Americans.
"Does the administration consider this latest vaccine mandate for private sector companies to be a workaround for the federal government to require vaccines?" asked the Daily Caller's Shelby Talcott.
"Meaning to require them for the American people?" Psaki questioned.
"Well, this is a tool, a step that again, there's legal authority for based on a 50-year-old law, and one that we took action on because the president wanted to use every lever at his disposal to protect more people and save more lives," she responded.
"But no, its not - we don't have the ability to tell every American you have to be vaccinated," Psaki admitted. "There's a means of encouraging it, of mandating it through certain pathways and that's exactly what we've done."
As part of Biden's six-pronged plan to address rising COVID-19 cases across the country, he announced that all businesses with 100 or more employees must have all employees either get the vaccine for be subjected to weekly testing.
