White House press secretary Jen Psaki decided to single out Florida as a state that, in the Biden administration's opinion, "can do more" when she was asked what the government is doing to ensure distribution of funds to keep schools open.
During the Friday news briefing, Psaki named Florida as an example of a state that can do more in reference to distributing money to schools.
"We're continuing to exert pressure anywhere that hasn't," Psaki commented, referring to the areas where she feels COVID-19 funds meant for schools haven't found their way to their destination yet. "So, in terms of, an example would be Florida, where they have done little to distribute money, little to no steps to distribute money across the state and to school districts."
Psaki went on to skirt around the issue that many Democrat-run areas haven't been distributing the money properly to resume in-person instruction safely.
"Now, part of it is you have to write a plan for how you're gonna keep schools open to get the third traunch of money, and some [areas] have been delayed in that, but right now, that's an example of a state that can do more," Psaki said.
Psaki's claim came depiste the fact that Florida's schools have been open since Fall 2020, whereas in other parts of the country, many schools have shut down yet again and returned to remote learning amid the winter Omicron surge.
The press secretary for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, spokeswoman Christina Pushaw, had a lot to say in response to Psaki's statements.
"Florida public schools have been open to 100% of K-12 students since the Fall 2020 semester. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of many Democrat-run areas that received billions of dollars to 'safely reopen schools' but are still forcing kids to do ineffective Zoom classes," Pushaw fired back Friday.
