Do 45 percent of queer men support Donald Trump for president in 2020?
According to a new poll conducted on the international gay men's social network, Hornet, reported by Newsweek, apparently they do. The dating service, which includes gay men, bisexual men and transmen in the survey, asked 10,000 of its global users several questions regarding the upcoming election. Of the worldwide user response, 12 percent identified themselves as US citizens, with 45 percent of those stating they would vote for Trump while 51 percent would cast a ballot for Biden.
This is certainly interesting considering that in 2016 exit polls, 14 percent of the LGBT community voted for Trump. Another survey, by Morning Consult of 30,000 LGBT registered voters, found that 53 percent favored Biden and 20 percent Trump. Pink News tweeted, "Queer men to forgo their morals this November with a thumping 45 per cent vowing to back Donald Trump."
However, it seems most voices in LGBT media and advocacy have completely ignored the survey, with only a scattering of gay accounts musing they should now be wary of who is using the app.
While both surveys indicate an increase in LGBT Republican voters, LGBT media and advocacy prefer to dismiss the trend or ignore it altogether. Alphonzo David, president of the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBT advocacy organization in the country, for example tweeted, "This is the man @RichardGrenell calls the 'most pro-gay President in history' But the reality is Donald Trump is the most racist, anti-LGBTQ president we've seen in decades. It's time we #VoteHimOut."
In the tweet he cites a claim made by Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, in his tell-all Disloyal, although it appears to be little more than hearsay.
Per LGBTQ Nation, Cohen claims that Trump refused to allow contestant Kwame Jackson to win on "The Apprentice" alleging that he said, "There was no way I was going to let this black fag win." Cohen also stated, "As a rule, Trump expressed low opinions of all Black folks."
"What he said in private was far worse than what he uttered in public." Cohen said. White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said of Cohen, "Michael Cohen is a disgraced felon and disbarred lawyer, who lied to Congress." She continued, "He has lost all credibility, and it's unsurprising to see his latest attempt to profit off of lies."
LGBT media and advocacy simply refuse to listen to LGBT people on the right or take our arguments or concerns seriously. Dedicated so deeply to their own political worldview, they have no place for us at all. So it's not surprising they have chosen to dismiss, mock or ignore new evidence showing more LGBT people abandoning the left in favor of the right. But does the survey indicate such a massive migration? Possibly.
The dating app survey was global and accessible to users who were willing to take a few moments to record their opinions on their phone. The survey of registered voters better sheds light on LGBT adults who are politically active. But 20 percent of the LGBT community openly identifying as Republican and supporting Trump is a bigger deal than is being reported. LGBT make up roughly 4.5 percent of the US population, 20 percent of the LGBT population represents millions of people when considered. LGBT media and advocacy do not reach out to those of us on the right so they truly have no idea who we are or how many of us there are in the country.
Since the 2016 election, LGBT voices on the right have grown, many vocally supporting the president. The right-leaning LGBT group Outspoken has become politically active, organizing voters and providing a constant stream of important information and updates to the LGBT community on the right. For the first time in history, a Republican candidate has an official LGBT outreach effort, known as Trump Pride, linked to the president's website. Traditional LGBT GOP organizations like the Log Cabin Republicans have been registering voters and campaigning across the country. It's a different era.
LGBT media and advocacy are making a mistake by ignoring us and choosing to either shame or mock our political advocacy and efforts. The natural progression of equality is diversity of viewpoints and goals within the group, the LGBT world just has not accepted this yet.
Even the Newsweek article could not resist including the following qualifier into their report, "[H]is administration has repeatedly rolled back pre-existing LGBTQ rights and written amicus briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court in support of anti-gay discrimination." The LGBT left is too restricted and narrow-minded in what it considers LGBT interests and values and there is every bit of evidence to show the trend of LGBT people moving to the right will continue.
Ideological disagreement is healthy and it demonstrates a positive progression in American political and minority advocacy. Whether the LGBT establishment wishes to recognize it or not, American gay and transgender people live in an incredibly diverse and free country that not only accepts them, but celebrates their equality and normalcy in society.
Many of us are Republicans and many of us support President Trump. That cannot be shamed out of us, dismissed or ignored. Those of us who value conservative and libertarian policy and world views are going to use that freedom and acceptance to continue to share our message. Whether the LGBT establishment counts us in their numbers or not.
