Disney was seeking to fire The Mandalorian actress Gina Carano since November, according to Hollywood Reporter.
"They have been looking for a reason to fire her for two months, and today was the final straw," said a person from Lucasfilm with knowledge of the situation.
Carano, who played the Rebel Alliance soldier Cara Dune, had made a number of controversial posts in November. One of these posts was a tongue-in-cheek meme stating that Democrats were recommending "we all wear blindfolds along with masks so we can't see what's really going on." Media reports claimed that she was mocking the use of masks, although there is no evidence that the post itself was a criticism of mask usage during the coronavirus pandemic.
In a separate post, Carano argued that the government should do more to stop voter fraud. Some media outlets have falsely reported that she questioned the results of the 2020 election, but she did not make any claims that the election was fraudulent.
A few months prior, Carano had also seen controversy after changing her pronouns in her Twitter bio to beep/bop/boop, a reference to the Star Wars character R2-D2. She defended herself by claiming that her bio had "zero to do with mocking trans people & [100 percent] to do with exposing the bullying mentality of the mob that has taken over the voices of many genuine causes."
She later deleted the fake pronouns from her bio after a conversation with fellow Star Wars actor Pedro Pascal.
Lucasfilm was reportedly going to create a spinoff series staring Carano, but it was ultimately cancelled due to her series of tweets in November.
Carano was ultimately fired on Thursday after she posted an image to her Instagram story comparing the political division in the United States to the Holocaust.
In response, conservatives have rallied in support of Carano and have called upon Disney+ users to cancel their subscriptions.
