Republican state lawmakers in Wisconsin have set up a Christmas tree in the Capitol rotunda last week in defiance of Governor Tony Evers, local WKOW reports.

Governor Evers had previously stated that no Christmas tree would be set up in the state capitol due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, although it is unclear what the relation between the two is.

The tree was set up by Representatives Paul Tittl and Shae Sortwell, with Tittl announcing the erection of the tree on Twitter.

"So this week, we decided to put up a Christmas tree in the Capitol for all the staff in the building to enjoy," Tittl tweeted. "This year has also been horrible for many, so we wanted this tree to be something everyone can look forward to seeing and have a sense of hope."

The lawmakers asked the Wisconsin Department of Administration if they could erect the tree as part of an "historical display" during the month of December and the first week of January. The request was denied by the DOA.

Nevertheless, the lawmakers set up the display anyway.
