Rihanna backs Johnny Depp's inclusion in Savage X Fenty show despite threats of boycott

Despite the trending use of "#BoycottFenty," Rihanna has made no sign of backing down from giving a starring role to Depp. One Twitter user noticed Depp's name in the credits for the show's screener on Amazon, confirming the reports.

Billionaire singer and businesswoman Rihanna is facing backlash after reports of actor Johnny Depp starring in her newest Savage X Fenty fashion show circulated online, re-sparking accusations of his alleged abuse of his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Depp, 57, who had recently taken part in a highly-publicized defamation trial with Heard, 36, would star as Rihanna's lingerie line's first male celebrity lead in her latest show, which will stream on Nov. 9.

In June, an American jury found Heard guilty of defaming Depp for writing an op-ed in the Washington Post where she claimed to be a survivor of domestic abuse. However, the case is still not settled in the public eye.

In 2020, Depp lost a libel case in a British court against The Sun newspaper over an article that called him a "wife beater," according to BBC.

Judge Andrew Nicol of the Royal Courts of Justice in London said the publication had proved the claims in the article to be "substantially true," and found that 12 of the 14 alleged incidents of domestic violence had occurred.

With both actors having large fanbases, Rihanna's Savage X Fenty pick has fueled a fire of online comments, with some defending the singer's choice, and some calling for a boycott.

"It's time for Fenty and @rihanna to open their eyes and realize that the vast majority of their fans want them to #DitchDepp," one tweeter wrote, adding the hashtag "#AbuserxFenty," which many critics have been using.

On the show's promotional tweet, another Twitter user wrote "I'm counting the ways in which you've disappointed abuse and r*pe survivors and they are endless." This reply was hidden by the Savage X Fenty account.

Some have even gone as far as to compare the actors' abusive relationship to that of singer Chris Brown and Rihanna herself, who were also part of a highly-publicized scandal when Brown left her bruised and bloody during an argument in 2009. Brown was arrested and handed a sentence of community service and domestic violence counseling, as well as a restraining order, according to the Guardian.

Despite the trending use of "#BoycottFenty," Rihanna has made no sign of backing down from giving a starring role to Depp. One Twitter user noticed Depp's name in the credits for the show's screener on Amazon, confirming the reports.
