Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is set to testify on August 17 in Atlanta, Georgia in front of a grand jury in, what the prosecution alleges was his role in looking into election integrity concerns in Georgia's 2020 general election results.
The New York Times reported that Rudy Giuliani "has been told that he is a target of the criminal investigation in Georgia into election interference. He is scheduled to testify in Atlanta later this week."
Giuliani was informed that he was the target of a probe into his possible interference in the 2020 election. Much of this stems from the Trump campaign's efforts to create slates of alternate electors who could vote for Trump in the Electoral College should the original results be found inaccurate.
The investigation is being led by the district attorney of Fulton County, Fani Willis. On August 9, a Fulton County judge in Georgia ordered Trump's former private attorney to appear before a special grand jury.
Willis said her investigation is covering "solicitation of election fraud, the making of false statements to state and local governmental bodies, conspiracy, racketeering, violation of oath of office and any involvement in violence or threats related to the election’s administration."
The Times reports that Donald Trump tried to convince Georgian GOP leaders to overturn the election results in the Peach State. Giuliani is to be asked about December 2020 conversations he had with state legislative legislative panels allegedly in support of Trump's efforts.
In her petition to obtain testimony from Giuliani, along with other Trump associates, Willis wrote, "There is evidence that (Giuliani’s) appearance and testimony at the hearing was part of a multi-state, coordinated plan by the Trump Campaign to influence the results of the November 2020 election in Georgia and elsewhere."
A Giuliani lawyer confirmed to the Times that their client was named as a key figure in the Georgia election investigation.
According to CNN, last week when the Georgia judge ordered Giuliani appear it was unclear if the former New York City mayor was officially a target or not.
