A barrage of missile strikes on Kyiv by Russia has left at least one dead and seven injured on New Year's Eve.
The chaos was reported by Mayor Vitali Klitschko, who said that areas across several districts were destroyed, as well as several pieces of important infrastructure such as a bridge and several police stations.
It is not known how many locations were destroyed in the missile strikes and how many were hit by falling debris from intercepted rockets, reports ABC News.
Russia recently sent new hypersonic cruise missiles into active duty, President Vladimir Putin announced during a meeting on Wednesday with defense officials.
"I'm sure that such a powerful weapon will let Russia defend against potential external threats and will contribute to protecting the national interests of our country," Putin said.
Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu added: "The focus of this deployment will be to counteract threats facing Russia and to maintain regional peace and stability together with friendly countries."
The announcement comes after Russia blamed soldiers for illegally using their cell phones for a missile strike that killed 89 Russian troops. Four Ukrainian rockets hit a Russian barracks near Makilvka in Donetsk on New Year's Eve.
Moscow said that Ukrainian forces discovered the base`s position because of the illegal use of cell phones by Russian troops. “This factor allowed the enemy to track and determine the coordinates of the soldiers' location for a missile strike,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
