Ryerson University will be changing its name to Toronto Metropolitan University after a unanimous vote by the school's board of governors on Tuesday.

The school's name has been a topic of controversy since the cultural protests that took place across Canada and much of the west after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020.

Ryerson committed to changing its name last year due to its namesake, Egerton Ryerson, who was an architect of Canada's residential school system.

The name was one of 22 recommendations made by an appointed task force that examined the life and legacy of Ryerson.

The statue of Egerton Ryerson will also not be reinstalled after it was topped by protestors last year.

Over 2,600 names were suggested, according to a statement from President and Vice-Chancellor Mohamed Lachemi.

"Toronto Metropolitan University is where diverse people, cultures, ideas, beliefs and lived experiences come together, just like the very city we call home. A university where we create and explore new ways of thinking, doing and being, so that we can make a positive impact on the world around us," he said.
