Saskatchewan RCMP are reviewing the actions of an officer who made his way into a home carrying an axe, reports CTV News.
The officer was captured on video carrying an axe into the home after yelling and swearing. He was responding to a call concerning a man who had self-harmed.
Jonas Hardlotte was in the home, located in Stanley Mission—north of Saskatoon by roughly 450 kilometres. The Cree man captured a one-minute video of the incident and posted it to Facebook.
The 33-year-old said he was feeling depressed and his mother-in-law called on the local clinic for a check-up.
In a statement, Cpl. Rob King, a spokesperson for the RCMP said that the clinic called the police requesting for help on Tuesday after learning that the man had injured himself.
According to King, an officer arrived at the house with two nurses and the officer could see the man bleeding through the window. The Mountie proceeded to attempt to get into the home.
Hardlotte said he felt intimidated after the officer acted rudely and did not open the door. He then started recording the incident.
"I thought I did something wrong," he said, "I told him, 'I'll wait for the clinic. ... You obviously see I'm good. You checked up on me."'
The officer can be heard yelling and swearing and tells Hardlotte’s cousin to open the door. He then proceeded to bang on the window with his fist yelling, "Open the door now."
"The (expletive) clinic is here to check on you. Open the door or I'm coming back with a sledgehammer."
The officer then walks away and Hardlotte’s cousin opens the door. The video shows the officer return and walk through the door with an axe.
"You think I was kidding," he says as two nurses enter the home behind him.
King noted that the RCMP are aware that the recording on Hardlotte’s phone was stopped by the officer who also took it away.
"He had no right to do that," Hardlotte said.
King said the RCMP is reviewing the incident and the officer has been reassigned.
"Transparency and accountability are critical in our role as the provincial police service," said King in the statement.
"The Saskatchewan RCMP extends sincere appreciation to the members of the public for bringing this video to our attention."
