On Monday, college students at the University of Texas Austin responded to the 21st anniversary of 9/11. While this anniversary is often paired with the reminder to "never forget," it seems that this younger generation of Americans has not only forgotten, but also doesn't seem to care about what happened on 9/11

Students attending UT Austin were asked if the date still held significance or if they even remembered what happened that day.

"Nobody cares about it," one student shared. "The younger generation doesn’t care because we hate the military, we hate America."

He then went on to ask, if Juneteenth isn’t given the support it deserves in America, why would we support 9/11?

Another student said that "for me it doesn’t hold a lot of significance, and it just feels like a lot of times it makes up for like, excessive patriotism." She then went on to share that having to watch 9/11 videos in class, showing burning buildings and people dying was very traumatic for her.

"I forgot that it was 9/11 the other day, until I saw a post about it," one student shared. When asked if she felt that it was still significant she responded, "maybe, but not really to the younger generation."

After the initial question regarding 9/11, students were then asked if they were proud to be American.

"Not one bit, not one bit, I’ve never been more embarrassed to be an American, I’ll say that," one student shared.

Another student, who shared that she was majoring in journalism, said, "can I be completely honest? No." When asked which country she would rather live in, she stated Mexico.

"I do have Mexican parents who were born and raised in Mexico, and I would choose Mexico," she shared. "I feel more Mexican than I do American, let’s just say that."

One of the only students who was both proud to be an American and felt that 9/11 was a significant date was a former Marine.

"I personally served in the United States Marine Corp, 7 years, and the stuff they do in the field…they’ll do stuff out there that the rest of the country will never know about and it’s a thankless job." he shared.

Older gentlemen who lived through 9/11 also responded to the questions, sharing they were very proud to be Americans and that the younger Americans who weren’t proud or wanted to go live in a different country over the US, were spoiled and "if you don’t like it, then leave."
