Scientists are calling on the World Health Organization (WHO) to revise its coronavirus recommendations after many say that there is evidence showing that the virus can infect people through small airborne particles.

In an open letter, 239 scientists from all over the world shared evidence with the WHO suggesting that people can be infected by smaller particles. Researchers involved made a plan to publish the evidence in a scientific journal, reports Global News.

The WHO previously stated that the virus spreads through small droplets coming from the mouth or nose that are spread when an infected person sneezes, coughs or speaks.

The scientists, however, claim the virus can infect people through both large droplets and smaller droplets that have been exhaled.

"We are aware of the article and are reviewing its contents with our technical experts," said Tarik Jasarevic, a spokesperson for the WHO, in an email to Reuters.

The WHO has said the evidence is unconvincing.

"Especially in the last couple of months, we have been stating several times that we consider airborne transmission as possible but certainly not supported by solid or even clear evidence," said Dr. Benedetta Allegranzi, an infection prevention and control specialist for the WHO.
