Vermont Democrat Senator Patrick Leahy, 80, who was selected to preside over former President Donald Trump's impeachment trial in the Senate, was hospitalized Tuesday, according to a spokesperson.
Leahy was taken to a hospital after he reportedly complained he wasn't feeling well following the Senate swearing in process, according to the New York Post.
"This evening, Senator Leahy was in his Capitol office and was not feeling well," Leahy's spokesman David Carle said in a statement.
"He was examined in the Capitol by the Attending Physician. Out of an abundance of caution, the attending physician recommended that he be taken to a local hospital for observation, where he is now, and where he is being evaluated," he continued.
Leahy was visibly out of breath and seemed unwell during the proceedings, according to The Post.
Leahy, a 46-year Senator, was sworn in as President Pro Tempore of the Senate, making him responsible for overseeing the former President's impeachment trial in the Democrat-controlled Senate. It is unclear if Leahy's health will be a factor in potentially delaying the trial set to begin the week of Feb. 8.
