Senior counsel on Bragg's indictment team led dozens of lawsuits against the Trump administration

A NY Times article published in December of last year revealed that Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg recruited Matthew Colangelo, a justice official with a history of investigating Trump and strong ties dating back to the Obama administration, to help lead the Trump indictment team.

Colangelo, 48, came to Bragg's team as a lead investigator after having led dozens of investigations and lawsuits against the nation's 45th president while working in various positions. 



Before becoming one of Bragg's top investigators, Colangelo led the New York attorney general’s civil inquiry into Mr. Trump.

Colangelo was appointed to the Department of Justice as acting associate AG when Biden took office overseeing the Civil Rights and Tax divisions among others, being the third-highest ranking official at the department.
 
Working with the Obama administration, Colangelo was a senior Labor Department official. He later would work with Leticia James on her inquiries against Trump.

Colangelo and Bragg overlapped while working together at the NY AG's office - Bragg rose to chief deputy attorney while Colangelo was chief counsel for federal initiatives.

It was in this role that Colangelo led dozens of investigations and lawsuits against Trump, his family businesses, his charities and his administration. 

"Matthew Colangelo brings a wealth of economic justice experience combined with complex white-collar investigations, and he has the sound judgment and integrity needed to pursue justice against powerful people and institutions when they abuse their power," Bragg said in a statement at the time confirming the hire.

Many have questioned Colangelo's credentials as well as the fast-track rise that landed him as one of Bragg's lead officials on the unprecedented indictment of our country's 45th president. 

Colangelo has never been a line prosecutor nor has he worked as any kind of criminal defense lawyer. Colangelo's longest stint was at the NAACP Legal and Educational Defense Fund where he spent seven years.
