In-person Service Canada centres are being shut down by the federal government over coronavirus concerns. Some locations had already shut down before the decision was made, according to Global News.

The announcement was made on Thursday and the Liberals noted that the move should not affect the majority of people currently seeking EI benefits as most applications are submitted online.

The minister responsible for Service Canada noted that alternative arrangements can be made for people in need of in-person services.

In a statement, Ahmed Hussen, the Social Development Minister said “We recognize that this might be a challenge for some Canadians who prefer to receive services in person. I want to assure Canadians that we are committed to ensuring they all have access to the support they need and deserve.”

“This is an evolving situation, and we will continue to make sure our response reflects the unprecedented challenges we face. Along with serving Canadians, health and safety is and will remain our top priority.”

There are over 600 in-person Service Canada centres throughout the country.
