On Friday, November 2 at 9pm, CBC will be airing a new documentary centering around Canadian professor Jordan Peterson and his ascent to international prominence. Produced by filmmaker Patricia Marcoccia, the film follows the formerly low profile psychology professor on his rapid rise to one of Canada’s most well known figures. Entitled Shut Him Down and produced by Holding Space Films Ltd., the documentary covers the tumultuous events of Fall 2016.
With unparalleled access to Peterson and his inner circle, the film delves into the controversy of the debate around Bill C-16 hearing from both sides of the argument with never before seen footage. To his supporters and fans, Peterson is viewed as free speech hero who is doing the necessary work of defending freedom of expression and standing up to the overreaching forces of political correctness. To his detractors and critics, Peterson is seen as someone who is insensitive and even transphobic for refusing to be compelled to use people’s preferred pronouns. Furthermore, some of them have critiqued his interpretation of Bill C-16 saying that his concerns about free speech are misguided and overblown. Shut Him Down takes a unrivaled look at the growing tensions between free speech and hate speech, examining a range of views on both sides of this debate.
