New Democrat leader Jagmeet Singh called on Canada to "put pressure on Israel" amid violence in the Gaza Strip and across Israel.
The comments came on Wednesday during a press conference, where Singh called on the Trudeau Liberals to halt the sales of arms from Canada to Israel.
"My heart goes out to the folks and the community members, the Palestinians struggling with horrible loss and extreme violence right now. It is very scary," said Singh.
"Canada can play a stronger roll, and Justin Trudeau specifically can play a stronger roll. One of the things that we've mentioned, and other human rights experts have said," said Singh. "We need to put pressure on Israel to engage in a peaceful resolution. One of the elements of pressure we can place, is making sure we're not selling arms to Israel that are being used in conflict that is breaching international law, or violating human rights. "
According to government data, the Liberals exported $13.7 million in military goods technology to Israel in 2019.
"We need to apply pressure so that we can encourage a peaceful resolution. We need peace. People in Israel and in Palestine have the right to live in peace. But we need to apply pressure to achieve that," Singh continued.
Among the goods Canada has sent to Israel are military drones, aircrafts, guns, and missiles.
The NDP's membership during their latest convention called on the party to have Canada stop its sale of arms to Israel.
On Monday, Conservative leader Erin O'Toole condemned the "frightening campaign of rocket attacks by Hamas" in Israel. The Trudeau Liberals' Foreign Affairs Minister, Marc Garneau, released a statement calling for "de-escalation."
