Pfeffer allegedly shot Fitzgerald three times initially before firing another three shots into his face and head once he was wounded and laying on the ground.
The Philadelphia Police Homicide Unit went over the timeline of events in a press conference Tuesday morning.
According to a spokesperson, "Officer Fitzgerald was in full uniform in a patrol vehicle when he observed three males on 1800 block of Montgomery Avenue. He attempted to conduct a pedestrian investigation, at which time the males fled on foot." He then "notified police radio that he was in foot pursuit of the three males. Two of the males hid in the area, the third, Miles Pfeffer, was still being pursued.
The spokesperson revealed that there was footage of the incident, but said that out of respect for Fitzgerald's family, it would not be shown. He described that in the video, Fitzgerald can be seen catching up with Pfeffer and telling him to "go to the ground."
The pair then wrestled behind a vehicle, at which point Pfeffer pulled out a handgun and shot Fitzgerald three times. "You can hear the shots and see the muzzle flash," the spokesperson said. "Bang, bang, bang."
He explained that while Fitzgerald was on the ground, Pfeffer fired three additional shots, "bang, bang, bang," before attempting unsuccessfully to remove the officer's gun from its holster.
Pfeffer was allegedly accompanied by his brother at the time, and the pair were picked up by their mother following the shooting. The 18-year-old Middle Bucks Institute of Technology student was quickly arrested at his family's wealthy, suburban home in Buckingham Township, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
Pfeffer has been hit with twenty-four charges, including murder and criminal homicide of a law enforcement officer, alongside robbery, carjacking, and evading arrest.
A photo of Pfeffer shows him wearing a hoodie depicting what appears to be a "crossed-out dollar sign," which is a known anti-capitalism symbol.
