On Wednesday, the Disney Corporation announced they’re actively pursuing building neighborhoods for people to live in, long-term. Their pilot program for this project is a 1900 housing unit zone in the Rancho Mirage area of Palm Springs, California.

The town will be called Cotino. It’s described as a place where people of all ages can buy units like condominiums, single-family houses, and estates. If you read between the lines, a focus for the company is on the ages 55+ demographic as well.

The video introduction has a Disney executive standing in a desert and promising to build a paradise in that landscape.

"As we prepare to enter our second century, we are developing new and exciting ways to bring the magic of Disney to people wherever they are, expanding storytelling to storyliving. We can’t wait to welcome residents to these beautiful and unique Disney communities where they can live their lives to the fullest," said Disney Parks chairman Josh D’Amaro.

The pitch is best summarized as people who go to Disney World and never want to leave. This is in part how Storyliving by Disney is advertised, seeing as it’ll be in the same division of management as the company’s cruises and theme parks.

The general system of governance for the Disney city is outlined as if it were a private club, but with methods of access to the general public. Alongside the promises of features like wellness programs and "live entertainment," they mention a beach attraction that has community exclusivity in mind.

One can expect to see the usual amenities of any town in the USA when it comes to shopping and entertainment.

The exact details of Disney’s involvement don’t include literal ownership of the communities, or being directly involved in building houses. The third-party that the company is bringing in to build Cotino is DMB Development. According to The Verge, DMB has experience building "luxury communities." They’re responsible for the likes of Silverleaf, Arizona and Hawaii’s Kukuiula.

Disney outlines Cotino as being a " 24-acre grand oasis" but with technology designed for low water consumption and energy efficiency in mind.

"Disney Imagineers will play a key role in developing the creative concept for the communities, working in conjunction with respected developers and homebuilders." it says in the press release.

Based on the concept art provided, what Disney intends to do is provide neighborhood arrangements with a touch of their own creative personality to them (in a general sense beyond the Cotino area alone).

The storyliving announcement by Disney comes alongside ongoing reports and updates about their Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser project. A hotel experiment that Insider labeled as "controversial," facing recent cancellations by some over the hotel's limitations and high prices.
