A new study released Tuesday morning by the Fraser Institute found that the Trudeau Liberals' carbon tax of $170 per tonne of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 would cut over 200,000 jobs in Canada.

That figure accounts for "jobs created by new government spending and household rebates of carbon charges."

"Unlike previous cases when the government proposed major policy changes, it has not released any quantitative economic analyses of the impacts of the plan, except to claim that the policy will have no effect on GDP," the study writes.

The study presents analysis using "large empirical model of the Canadian economy," that shows "substantial negative impacts." These impacts also include a 2.1 percent drop in GDP.

The study points out that it reduced the nominal value of the carbon tax to $140 "to account for inflation," and that by doing this, they could estimate that the Trudeau carbon tax would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 26 percent, which still falls short of the Paris Climate Accord targets. To reach those targets, Canada would have to implement a $240 per tonne tax.

In total, the study predicts the following job losses in each province:

British Columbia; 22,920
Alberta, 30,540
Saskatchewan; 1,280
Manitoba; 1,680
Ontario; 98,770
Quebec; 42,320
New Brunswick, 2250
Nova Scotia; 1,460
Prince Edward Island; 450
Newfoundland and Labrador; 1,040
