A mother in Surrey, a suburb of Vancouver, was accompanying her two kids on their walk home from school Tuesday afternoon when she was struck and killed by a runaway truck, Vancouver Sun reports.
Local RCMP, who serve as the police force for the suburb which lacks its own municipal force, were called to the scene at 2:45 pm for a collision involving two vehicles and a pedestrian.
The unaccompanied delivery truck rolled from where it was parked into traffic where it struck a vehicle. Without losing momentum, the truck continued into the sidewalk where it struck the mother of two.
Paramedics attempted to revive the woman at the scene, but their efforts proved futile. Her two children survived the incident without physical injuries.
According to investigators, the driver of the delivery truck is cooperating fully. They did not identify which company owns the truck, but it does occasionally deliver packages on behalf of Amazon, which released a statement on the tragic misfortune.
"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and loved ones during this difficult time," Amazon said in a statement "We are working with law enforcement and the delivery service partner as they investigate."
