A convicted felon out on probation is accused of shooting four people on Saturday in Los Angeles. The victims had volunteered to paint over the gang graffiti before gunshots rang out.
According to a report from Fox News, one of the victims, a 60-year-old man, was killed in the incident, two underwent surgery and were treated for their wounds, and the fourth was treated and released from the hospital.
Surveillance footage showed 24-year-old Jamal Jackson getting out of his vehicle near the Ice cream shop just prior to the shooting. Police investigators are asking for any more victims to come forward.
Jackson was out on probation for carrying a concealed firearm, and according to the report he is a known gang member.
In a statement to Fox, Los Angeles deputy district attorney John Hatami, said "Jackson, who was placed on probation by George Gascon for carrying a concealed firearm on his person in a past case, was arrested today and is accused of shooting four innocent victims, killing one of them on April 15.”
Hatami is currently running to replace district attorney Gascon. He pointed a finger at his opponent and said “George talks about prosecuting ‘gun violence,’ but it really is only words, phrases and politicians for George. No action. He can care less about true public safety," Hatami continued “The [four] victims were just trying to clean up their neighborhood, George's policies have made us less safe. There is no justice and no peace on the streets of Los Angeles under George's reign. It's time for him to leave."
Many have accused Gascon of being soft on crime. Last year he disbanded the Parole Division Bureau of Persecution Support Operations, which notifies victims of a crime when a parole hearing is scheduled for their perpetrator.
He also gave a teen a five-month sentence in a “juvenile probation camp,” after he was caught on video running over a mother and her child. The lenient sentence came despite the teen having a criminal past.
