Sunday evening, a shooting in Washington DC left a 15-year-old dead and several others, including a police officer, injured during a gathering near the Moechella Music Festival.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department said at a press conference following the shooting that four people were shot at the event, including the police officer. The officer did not return fire in the crowded area.
Chief Robert J. Contee III said that the MPD officer was shot in a lower extremity and is expected to survive and added that other victims were transported to a local hospital.

Contee added, "At some point during the course of this gathering, there was some type of incident or fight that happened between some of the individuals who were in attendance. That incident was broken up. Shortly thereafter, there was a secondary incident — we’re unsure of what that incident was, but people started to scatter at that point."

Contee said, "We need to make sure individuals are held accountable for their actions. When you have large gatherings in a dense area, it only takes one person with a firearm to make this a dangerous setting."

The chief added that illegal firearms were recovered by police officers earlier in the evening and at least one firearm had an extended magazine, however, the firearm that was used to shoot the officer has not yet been recovered. Contee also said that some people were trampled and injured as people fled for safety when they heard the shots.
According to Contee, the marketing for the event convinced MDP that a heavy police response would be necessary. Over 100 officers were deployed to monitor the event.
This is a developing story.
