A 23-year-old man has been arrested after stabbing three to death and wounding others inside the Basilica of Notre-Dame in Nice, France.  The incident took place at about 9 am local time, BBC reports.

The Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi told media that there had been a "terrorist attack at the heart of the Notre-Dame basilica."

He said one elderly victim who had come to pray was "virtually beheaded."

The suspect was shot and then detained. While being treated for his injuries, Estrosi said he "repeated endlessly 'Allahu Akbar' (God is greatest.)"

Reports confirm two of those who died were attacked by the man inside of the church.

This incident comes almost two weeks after a French high school history teacher was beheaded after showing his class caricatures including one of the Prophet Muhammad during a discussion on free speech.
