Over a thousand "physical verification" home checks were performed by police agencies across the country in April. The checks were conducted to ensure that people were not violating quarantine while under mandatory isolation, according to Global News.
The RCMP says the Public Health Agency of Canada requested the verifications. The RCMP works with police forces on provincial and territorial levels by sharing the information they need in order to conduct the searches.
Last month, officials said that people who are not abiding by the orders can receive a fine of up to $1 million, and three years in prison.
“(PHAC) has requested law enforcement physical verification checks on 1,122 priority individuals,” said Robin Percival, an RCMP spokesperson.
No fines were issued by the RCMP as a result of the checks.
The RCMP data was provided for the period between April 10 and April 30. There is no up to date available at this time.
Officers were asked to track the action they had to take in order to enforce the quarantine rules. The information was sent to Mountie headquarters located in Ottawa and then given to public health officials.
The RCMP noted the PHAC received the information from provincial and municipal police who are responsible for sending out data front their specific jurisdictions.
PHAC asked the RCMP in April to make follow ups on individuals who were possibly breaking self-isolation rules.
The searches are mostly limited to cases that have had initial verifications done by PHAC over the phone, by email or by text.
