On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that if China were to ally itself with Russia in the ongoing war in Ukraine it would mark the start of World War III.
According to the Daily Mail, Zelensky was speaking to German newspaper Die Welt and said, "For us, it is important that China does not support the Russian Federation in this war. In fact, I would like it to be on our side. At the moment, however, I don't think it's possible. But I do see an opportunity for China to make a pragmatic assessment of what is happening here. Because if China allies itself with Russia, there will be a world war, and I do think that China is aware of that."
Zelensky's comments came the same day Joe Biden made a surprise visit to Kyiv and pledged another $500 million in aid and further sanctions on Russia. This after the US sent weapons and munitions to Ukraine with value of $30 billion dollars and sent another $50 million in humanitarian aid.
China's foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Monday, "It is the United States and not China that is endlessly shipping weapons to the battlefield."
"We urge the United States to earnestly reflect on its own actions, and do more to alleviate the situation, promote peace and dialogue, and stop shifting blame and spreading false information," the Chinese spokesman added.
On Saturday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with Chinese foreign policy official Wang Yi at the Munich Security Conference, reports CNN. Blinken said the recent Chinese surveillance balloon that traversed the continental US was "unacceptable" but his Chinese counterpart offered no apology.
Blinken reportedly "warned" Yi of "consequences should his country wade into the ongoing conflict" in Ukraine, according to the Daily Mail. Blinken said that the Chinese should not provide military weapons to Moscow.
Zelenskiy told Die Welt that he had told Moldovan President Maia Sandu that Russia was planning a coup in the country and said to the outlet, "Maia Sandu never asked me for help, but she thanked me for the information. She knows our situation very well. Ukraine will always be ready to help Moldova."
