While waiting for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s weekly press conference, reporters were caught reacting to news that the Speaker had tested positive for COVID-19, saying "this is why we wear masks."

In footage from a C-SPAN stream, reporters are heard saying: "She shouldn’t come," "I think this is gonna be the end of this press conference," and "ok, so we don’t need to be here anymore."

One reporter asked if Pelosi was in the building at that moment. Another said anywhere would be safer than the press room.

Shortly before this, Pelosi’s spokesman Drew Hammill announced on Twitter that Pelosi had tested positive for COVID-19.

"After testing negative this week, Speaker Pelosi received a positive test result for COVID-19 and is currently asymptomatic," Hammill tweeted. "The Speaker is fully vaccinated and boosted, and is thankful for the robust protection the vaccine has provided."

"The Speaker will quarantine consistent with CDC guidance, and encourages everyone to get vaccinated, boosted and test regularly," he added.

Pelosi confirmed her condition in a tweet, saying that she has tested positive but remains asymptomatic.

"I tested positive for COVID and am asymptomatic. Thank you for your many kind wishes. I am grateful for them and to be vaccinated. Please get vaccinated and boosted if you haven’t already. COVID is still a public health challenge. Let’s keep up the fight to protect our care."

On Wednesday, Pelosi posted a photo of her standing in close quarters with President Biden, as he signed the Postal Service Reform Act of 2022.
