South Carolina Senator Tim Scott is expected to announce his bid for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination on May 22. While he didn't say outright that he'd be announcing the run, he did say that he would reveal his plans at a North Charleston event in about 3 weeks.

Scott has already created an exploratory committee, which has let him fundraise as the decision is made, and engage in polling and travel. He's also been engaged in a listening tour in states across the country, visiting New Hampshire and Iowa, the earliest primary and caucus states.

Speaking at Charleston school Meeting Street Academy on Sunday, Scott said "It is time to make the final step," and that "we will have a major announcement." A film crew was on hand at the school that the AP reported was gathering "content" for use at a later date.

If he announces, Scott would enter an already contentious field. Former President Donald Trump leads the GOP contenders in polling, and he's followed by Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis, who hasn't yet announced his plans, though he is expected to do so.

Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who actually was the one to appoint Scott to the Senate in the first place, has launched her bid, as has Vivek Ramaswamy. Arkansas' former Governor Asa Hutchinson has also tossed his hat into the ring. Former VP under Trump Mike Pence may also have a go at the highest executive office.

The AP reports that Scott's fundraising is already moving apace. "A pro-Scott super PAC," they note, "Opportunity Matters Fund, spent more than $20 million to help Republicans in 2022 and reported $13 million-plus on hand to start 2023. Tech billionaire Larry Ellison has donated at least $30 million to the organization since 2021, according to federal filings."
