BREAKING: Tornado watch issued for Toronto, possible flooding

A severe thunderstorm is heading through the Toronto area and a tornado watch has been issued by Environment Canada. The warning was issued shortly before 3 pm on Wednesday, according to The Weather Network.

People in the area have been asked to "take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches" and "be prepared for severe weather."

Environment Canada also issued a heat warning along with a severe thunderstorm warning for the city as it has reached over 30 C for six consecutive days.

Up to 25 millimetres of rain is expected to fall in the city within less than an hour possibly causing flooding.

"Tornado watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes," says Environment Canada.

Environment Canada has provided recommendations if the tornado watch turns into a warning, which is more serious:

• Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can.
• Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet.
• As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.
