Toronto Mayor John Tory has proven once again that he is the king of the oblivious, in a new letter wishing "menstruators" a happy "Menstrual Hygiene Day."
This day raises awareness of the challenges menstruators face in their ability to experience health periods with dignity," the letter reads, and goes on to say that the day "raises awareness about the stigma surrounding periods and calls for menstrual equity by providing marginalize communities with access to free menstrual hygiene products."
Tory then proudly proclaims to all Torontonians that today, May 28, 2020, is "Menstrual Hygiene Day" in the city of Toronto.
Notable words missing from the letter include "woman," "women," or "female."
The full letter can be read below.
This is actually the seventh Menstrual Hygiene Day by German advocacy group WASH United, who, of course, are partnered with the United Nations.
According to the Menstrual Hygiene website, Menstrual Hygiene Day "is a global advocacy platform that brings together the voices and actions of non-profits, government agencies, individuals, the private sector and the media to promote good menstrual hygiene management (MHM) for all women and girls."
While that is a fine and valid initiative, it is quite odd that the official website for Menstrual Health Day specifically names women and girls, but Mayor Tory's letter does not.
