Toronto rapper Top5 is one of two people arrested in connection to the January 31 shooting death of a 20-year-old outside his North York apartment.
The man, Hashim Omar Hashi, was entering his building's parking garage when a vehicle pulled up beside him. One suspect exited the car, and allegedly shot at the car multiple times.
Police say that Hashi was pronounced dead at the scene and had no history of criminal activity.
“Mr. Hashi was not involved in any gang activity nor was he involved in any gang affiliation. Mr. Hashi was a student studying accounting and worked part-time at the airport. He had a promising future and he was a very well-respected young man,” said Det. Sgt. Ted Lioumanis to reporters on Feb 6, according to CTV News.
“To this point, there is nothing to suggest that he was targeted for who Mr. Hashi was. I cannot say if he was targeted because he lived in the neighbourhood and that’s part of our investigation right now.”
One of the suspects, Hassan Ali, also goes by the stage name "Top5," whose following includes 135,000 Instagram followers and 18,000 YouTube subscribers. Top5 recently appeared on a Global News segment calling for less violence in his community.
"People see shootings here and they're scared," said Top5, who had been criticized for sending a violent message.
"Rap less about violence, because you don't want to encourage somebody else to go do something [or] retaliate," said Ali.
"Rap less about violence, we're getting to that, you know what I mean?"
Ali was arrested in Windsor, Ontario, roughly 360 kilometres away.
Ali has been charged charged with:
- Accessory After the Fact to Murder
- Two counts of Fail to Comply Probation
- Possess Schedule 1 Substance For Trafficking- Cocaine
- Possess Schedule 1 Substance for Trafficking- Fentanyl
- Possess Schedule 1 Substance for Trafficking- Oycodone
- Possess Proceeds of Property or Thing Obtained by Crime Exceeding $5,000
He is scheduled to appear in court, at 2201 Finch Avenue West, on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, at 9 a.m.
