Over a dozen train cars, including two of the three locomotives, were said to have fallen off the tracks, and though their contents have not been revealed, authorities have stated that they do not pose a threat to nearby residents.
According to NBC15, the incident took place around 12:15 pm. BNSF General Director Public Affairs Lena Kent explained that two cars had fallen into the Mississippi River, none of which contained hazardous materials. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation revealed that the cars "floated downstream soon after the derailment and passed under the WIS 82/Lansing Causeway before becoming mired along the shore."
The cars that derailed on land were carrying pait and lithium-ion batteries, and precautionary barriers were constructed to prevent pollution.
The Crawford County Sheriff's Department announced via Facebook that South 35th from South 171st to South 82nd in De Soto had been closed, adding that after review there was "no need for evacuation."
Wisconsin governor Tony Evers said via Twitter that he was monitoring the incident, and awaiting further details.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
