Glasson says that the US and the UK are no longer safe countries for transgender people due to a "wave of really anti-trans laws that are aimed at morally mandating us out of existence."

A trans-identified male activist in Ontario has launched a petition asking that the federal government allow transgender and non-binary people from nations such as the UK and the US to claim asylum due to safety concerns about laws that prohibit experimental child sex changes and aim to protect women’s sports and spaces.

The petition that has already garnered more than 26,000 signatures is the brainchild of Cait Glasson, a trans-identified male from Waterloo, Ontario. Glasson, who transitioned as an adult more than 30 years ago, told CTV News that Canada would make a good country to offer asylum because gender identity and gender expression are protected characteristics in law.

Glasson says that the US and the UK are no longer safe countries for transgender people due to a "wave of really anti-trans laws that are aimed at morally mandating us out of existence."

The “anti-trans” laws to which Glasson is referring are those that will protect children from undergoing invasive and irreversible sex change procedures while still in a crucial stage of identity development as well as those that propose to exclude trans-identified males from female sports categories and female spaces.

The petition says that the “world is becoming increasingly hostile to transgender and nonbinary individuals,” and that “[t]ransgender and nonbinary people's rights to live as themselves are being restricted and removed in many places” including in “so-called ‘Western democracies’ which have historically been presumed safe.”

It then goes on to say that the UK is revising its Equality Act to exclude trans people from its protections. This is not true. The UK is upholding the right of women and girls to the safety and privacy of female-only spaces, which has always been a provision in the Equality Act

“Canada has prided itself on being an inclusive, tolerant, and welcoming society for everyone regardless of gender identity or gender expression,” says the petition.

Glasson’s petition is sponsored by Green Party MP Mike Morrice, who told CTV News that “Canada should always be a safe place for people who are feeling that their lives are in danger.”

Morrice says the petition currently has more signatures than any other petition on the House of Commons website. He plans to present it to the House of Commons this coming spring.
