30-year-old Doreen Ford was the lead moderator of prominent subreddit r/Antiwork at least until Thursday when the other moderators ousted Ford after a botched Jesse Watters interview on Fox News.
Ford made it to Fox News for an interview earlier this week as r/Antiwork boasted over 1.6 million subscribers and garnered widespread attention. Much of that traction came within the last six months as the US job market struggles with its pandemic rebound.
Members of the community that expressed frustrations about Doreen’s interview felt like they didn’t get a clear message across about the group’s purpose and intent. They also thought Ford, who identifies as transgender/non-binary, wasn’t the best representative for the subreddit because of Ford's body language performance.
"Laziness is a virtue in a society where people constantly want you to be productive 24/7," Ford told Watters. When the Fox News anchor asked what Ford did for work, they responded with "dog walker."
After the interview, people online began combing through Ford’s social media presence. A recent report by Reduxx outlines the former r/antiwork moderator’s history with sexual assault. Ford detailed their past behaviors in a Facebook post. They said their "needs" weren’t being met and began habitually pleasuring themselves.
"After months of trying to keep myself in check, I began sporadically masturbating while they slept next to me or by themselves. Even though they stated this made them feel uncomfortable, these events continued to happen until I sought help through therapy."
Then Ford confessed to putting their partner’s hands in their boxers while that person slept.
"Lastly, the previously mentioned coping mechanism resulted in this person creating alarms for us so we wouldn’t fall asleep together and thus boundary violations would be minimized. Much to my retrospective disgust, my desperation for emotional intimacy led me to shut off the alarms at various points."
Other testimonies of Ford’s sexual abuse history have since been discovered.
"Doreen de Cleyre [Ford] had served as an editor with us but was exposed as a rapist," wrote an Anarchist think tank in October 2020.
Allegations of Ford’s misconduct were mentioned briefly in the moderator statement made by r/Antiwork after coming back from going private. But that statement has since been removed as the subreddit continues to cope with ongoing inner turmoil due to the power vacuum.
Reddit administrators had to de-mod Ford from their position as leader of the subreddit.
