Police officials have revealed that Nashville Covenant School shooter Audrey Hale had detailed manifestos outlining exactly how the transgender former student would undergo attacking the school, complete with a cartoon-like drawing of what Hale would wear during the shooting.
Nashville Police Chief John Drake told CBS Mornings that the attack may have been motivated by "resentment for having to go to that school," but added that he couldn’t go into further detail because "it's unconfirmed."
Drake revealed that police obtained a manifesto booklet from Hale that showed "exactly what she had planned to do. We have maps that show the entry point into the school, weapons that were going be used, the clothing that she was going to wear," noting that Hale had "drawn it up almost like a cartoon character."
According to a tweet from the Nashville Police Department, officers discovered additional material written by Hale in Hale’s Honda Fit that was seen in surveillance footage parking in the school’s parking lot.
According to a press release, the police department said, "Writings recovered from Hale revealed that her attack was calculated and planned."
"The head of the school was assassinated, so we feel it was targeted and planned," Drake added, noting that the children were also "obviously targeted."
Drake expressed gratitude for the quick actions of the officers, who arrived on the scene just 14 minutes after Hale arrived on school grounds and began shooting, as well as the school, which had a fire alarm going.
"They played a great role as well in preventing more lives from being lost."
According to the BBC, Drake said that police have spoken with Hale’s family, who said that Hale had been in treatment for an "emotional disorder."
"Her parents felt she should not own weapons," Drake says, who noted that Hale had purchased seven firearms legally. "She had been hiding several weapons within the house."
Drake said in a Tuesday press conference that Hale may have had "training" based on the shooter’s behavior during the attack.
"The suspect was on an upper level, we believe there has been some training to have been able to shoot from a higher level," Drake says. "From the video I've seen she stood away from the glass so she wouldn't be an easy target to be shot."
According to the Daily Mail, Hale graduated from Nossi College of Art and Design in 2022, and was seen in a short interview on the school’s "Senior Portfolio Show" talking about her "growth as an artist."
"It's been hard but it's also been an amazing experience when it comes to developing my creative talents and growing as an artist," Hale said. Hale's work includes
A source close to the Hale family told the Daily Beast that Hale was autistic but "high-functioning."
"And relatively recently announced she was transgender, identifying as he/him,” the source added.
