The definition of "transgender" has been constantly expanded in the past few years. What used to be a medical condition that individuals with gender dysphoria sought treatment for, it has now been politicized and forced to become an umbrella term for people who experience no gender dysphoria or even fetishize the act of transition. Trans people who long for the days where transition and dysphoria were treated seriously have coined these new invaders as “transtrenders,” with the implication that their motivation is attention and social accolades.
Radical activists have insisted that crossdressers, non-binary people, and gender fluid people are included under the transgender “umbrella.” These new additions seem to only cause confusion amongst the general public who historically have viewed transgenderism as indicative of a gender transition rather than simply being gender non-conforming. After all, who isn’t gender-nonconforming to some extent? Very few people align perfectly with their expected gender roles. With some exceptions, these individuals do not seek out medical intervention or transition.
One of the results of the de-medicalization of transgenderism is an alarming rate of children and teens who find themselves identifying as trans. An explosion of excess children seeking medical transition in the UK has caused a wave of backlash resulting in the country moving to ban underage transition. I personally believe this is also responsible for the declining rate of LGBT acceptance amongst millennials in the US A GLAAD survey reports that the percentage of young people who reported being “somewhat” or “very” comfortable with LGBT people dropped from 53 percent to 45 percent.
On my YouTube channel I took a deep-dive into the segment of the “trans” community who believes that gender dysphoria is not a pre-requisite for being transgender. You can check the video out below.
