Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Opposition Leader Erin O'Toole have both released statements marking the 32nd anniversary of the massacre at École Polytechnique de Montréal.
32 years ago today, a gunman entered the Montreal university and murdered 14 women in a terrorist attack.
In a statement, the prime minister said that "they were strong. They were smart. They were women. And they were murdered because of it."
"We cannot allow this gender-based violence to exist," he added. "So today, as we honour the memory of these 14 women, let us all keep working to end this violence - for good."
Erin O'Toole also released a statement, saying that "December 6, 1989, will forever be engraved in the history of Quebec. We must remember that 32 years ago, 14 women, 14 girls were murdered simply because they were women."
"Despite this tragedy, women are still the main victims of violence, even now in 2021. This year alone, over 10 women were killed by their partners in Quebec."
"We must fight against hatred and violence against women in all its forms, including harassment, sexual assault, and domestic violence," he added.
