On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a fresh round of sanctions against individuals and entities linked to Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
The move is in line with other G7 nations, whose leaders also pledged on Monday to impose further sanctions on Russia.
"We're imposing more sanctions in support of Ukraine," Trudeau wrote on Twitter. "These include sanctions on individuals and entities linked to the Russian defence sector, Ukrainian individuals who support the Russian occupation, as well as government and defence individuals and entities in Belarus."
He also highlighted an impending crackdown on "Russian state-sponsored disinformation and propaganda agents and entities," stating that Canada will "take additional and immediate measures to ban the export of certain advanced technologies that could improve Russia’s domestic defence manufacturing capability."
Working alongside the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan, Canada seeks to "ban the import of certain gold goods from Russia," with the goal of "further isolating them from the international financial system."
"Canada is committed to standing in unity to support the government and people of Ukraine in their fight for a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic future," the government wrote in a statement. "We will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine as it seeks to defend itself from Russian aggression."
The announcement of sanctions came following a virtual address by Ukrainian president Zelensky during the G7 summit near the German town of Garmisch-Partenkirschen.
Zelensky called on G7 leaders to assist his nation both as it fends off Russian aggression, and afterwards as it rebuilds.
