Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday that Canada would bring in several "severe" sanctions against Russia after its attack on Ukraine.
Trudeau announced that Canada and other G7 countries will bring forward even more sanctions as they move to harm Russia's economy. This is in line with President Joe Biden's announcement as well.
Canada will be targeting 62 entities, including Russian banks and individual Russian elites and family members, and that Canada would cancel export permits for Russian products.
"These sanctions are wide-reaching. They will impose severe costs on complicit Russian elites and they will limit President Putin’s ability to continue funding this unjustified invasion," said Trudeau on Thursday, calling the war the "greatest threat to European stability since the Second World War."
"These are deeply disturbing times for the international community and for people everywhere who care about freedom and democracy," said Trudeau. "Canada is unequivocal in our condemnation of Russia's unprovoked and unjustified attack on the sovereign, democratic state of Ukraine."
In a statement released last night, Trudeau said that Canada calls on Russia to immediately cease all hostile and provocative actions against Ukraine and withdraw all military and proxy forces from the country.
"Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected and the Ukrainian people must be free to determine their own future," the statement said.
"Russia’s actions will be met with severe consequences. Tomorrow morning, I will be meeting with G7 partners, and we will continue working closely and quickly with NATO and our allies to collectively respond to these reckless and dangerous acts, including by imposing significant sanctions in addition to those already announced.
"In the face of these attacks on Ukraine, Canada will take additional action to stop Russia’s unwarranted aggression. We continue to stand with Ukraine, its people, and the Ukrainian Canadian community here in Canada. Russia’s brazen acts will not go unpunished."
